How personal insurance works in the Netherlands
What is required by law, what is standard practice and what is optional? A short guide.
Required by law
Third-party car insurance (WA) is mandatory for every registered car — even when it's parked. Health insurance is also mandatory, but that is arranged separately.
Required in practice
Home/building insurance is required by your mortgage lender when you buy a house. A term life insurance is often requested with a mortgage too.
Strongly recommended
Personal liability insurance is not compulsory, but nearly every Dutch household has it — damage to others can be very expensive. Contents and travel insurance are sensible additions.
Dutch terms explained
- Deductible / excess — Eigen risico
- The part of a claim you pay yourself. A higher deductible means a lower premium.
- Claim-free years — Schadevrije jaren
- Every year without a car claim gives you a bigger no-claims discount. Claim-free years built up abroad can often be transferred — ask us.
- Underinsurance — Onderverzekering
- If your belongings are insured for too little, the insurer pays out only part of a claim. A guarantee against underinsurance prevents this.
- Policy conditions — Polisvoorwaarden
- The small print, always in Dutch. We read it for you and explain what it means in plain English.
